Clematis Care
Clematis care is, for the most part, fairly straightforward. Clematis grow best with full sun around the tops, where the blooms are. Around the base and root system, clematis prefer it to be cool and shady. The best way to attain this cool, shady zone is to apply heavy mulch near the base of the plant. This will block out the sun, as well as retain moisture to cool the soil.

As far as water goes, clematis care for soil that is moist to wet. When watering clematis, the taller the plant is, the more water that should be applied to sustain the full plant. Soil around the base of the clematis should not be allowed to dry out, as clematis is not very drought tolerant.

The most challenging aspect of clematis care is pruning. Pruning is also the most important part of clematis care, as when and how the plant is pruned generally determines when the clematis will bloom. Incorrect pruning will never kill clematis; it may only delay the bloom. When and how to prune a clematis depends greatly on the species that is in question, and the result that is desired.

Information on clematis care can be found from several sources. Internet sites and online newsgroups have some good information about clematis care. Local nurseries and garden centers will also be able to help. There are books in many local libraries that focus on clematis care.
